A good travel alarm clock is one that has many of the things you are used to at home. The major difference is that it must be small. You must be able to throw it in a suitcase or small carryon bag, and be able to forget about it. It shouldn't take up much room, and will be ready for you when you get to your destination.
A good travel alarm clock will also be easy to use. Since you probably won't be using it that often, you don't want it to be difficult or you will have to spend a lot of time setting it each night. If it's something easy and something you are used to, it will be nice and quick and you won't mind using it.

Another thing that makes a good travel alarm is that it is something that will wake you up! The whole point of an alarm clock is to wake you up, so if it's too soft or for some other reason doesn't work for you, then it's no good at all.
If your normal alarm clock is small enough, and works well, and uses a battery, that would be the perfect alarm clock. You'd know exactly how to set it and use it, and you know it wakes you up.
A really good travel alarm clock would also know to wake you up when you were in your lightest stage of sleep, so that you won't be as groggy when you get up. Think that's impossible? It's not. There are certain types of alarm clocks out there that can wake you up about when you want to get up - but do it at the exact time that it is best for your body. This way you will wake up nice and refreshed, and be ready to start your day.
Another thing that a good travel alarm clock would be able to do is keep track of how you slept the night before. If you could keep track of how you were sleeping, you would know if that late night cup of coffee is really hurting you, or if you should be going to bed sooner. Again, this is something that some alarm clocks do have!
The main function of an alarm clock is to wake you up when you want to be woken up. A good alarm will do that, and a whole lot more. As long as it's easy, small, and helpful, you'll want to use it for all of your trips.
