Travel RVing is fascinated with the assorted varieties of pets that RVers take along on their travels. Seventy five per cent of RV travelers take along their furry family members (well, most are furry) and wouldn't consider being without them. Of course, the vast majority have dogs or cats. But some walk to the sound of a different drum...
Animals come in all shapes and sizes, and many RVers find themselves devoted to unusual ones. They travel very happily with their chickens, ducks, rabbits, hedgehogs, pygmy goats, pot-bellied pigs, lizards, snakes, geckos, monkeys, skunks and many, many more. In short, if you can transport your pet's living habitat you are ready for the road.

Let's delve a little further into to characteristics of some unusual pets. Keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What causes one's skin to crawl warms the heart of another.
Have you ever thought of cuddling up with a skunk? If bred correctly, a de-scented skunk can make a wonderful pet. They can be warm, funny, cute and affectionate sometimes. They can also be very demanding, stubborn, and aloof. Skunks are very curious-- you will find them rummaging through your drawers, purse, laundry hampers, bed linens and other places they consider to be intriguing. They also steal things to make their beds softer. Most skunks are good campers.
Although you may think of them as animals to be raised on a farm, ducks can make splendid pets. Face it, baby ducks are just adorable and as they grow up they are friendly, sociable, and not very likely to fly away. Although ducks are not extremely potty-trainable, duck-loving RVers find this to be a very small obstacle to overcome. And, ducks do a fantastic job of eating up all your kitchen scraps.
Becoming extremely popular, so much so it is questionable as to whether to consider them "unusual" is the pet ferret. Ferrets have to be among the cutest of all our furry friends. They are warm and soft and love to be cuddled. Ferrets can easily be litter trained in just a few days. They are extremely clean animals and clean themselves like a cat. Unlike dogs and cats who get less playful as they get older, ferrets play enthusiastically throughout their entire lives. A drawback to RVing with a ferret is that a ferret needs a large cage. Smaller travel trailers and van conversions don't lend themselves to homing a ferret. However, if you travel a lot, you will see ferrets nearly everywhere you go. Motorhomes, large travel trailers and 5th wheels are ideal for the ferret loving RVer.
Some folks would never consider sharing their home with a pig. But pot-bellied pigs are dearly loved by their humans for their intelligent, loyal, and affectionate personalities. Highly intelligent, pot-bellied pigs can be house trained, leash trained, and even taught a few tricks. But, their intelligence can make them problematic, too. While they can be funny and playful, they can be pig-headed (pun intended) and sensitive. Still, judging from what we've seen during our RV travels, more than just a handful of people travel with their pot-bellied pigs.
